The Sunderbans situated at the southern most part of West Bengal is a cluster of low-lying island in the Bay of Bengal, famous for its unique mangrove forest. The Sunderban delta is formed from the silt deposits of the rivers Ganges, Brahmaputra and the Meghna tributaries. Till today it is dynamic and under formation. It is an example of an endangered ecological system that is highly populated as well as fragile and economically valuable.

The majority of the population in the Sunderbans is dependent upon agriculture and fishing and on the mangrove for forest related resources such as firewood, honey, timber, fruit and fodder. Prawn cultivation is also practiced.

Solar PV project run by Sebayan ( 2004-8) under MNRE/TERI Program:

Sebayan Sangha wants to bring Sustainable development concept in the Patharpratima Block of the Sunderban delta. For any kind of development, whether in Education, Agriculture, Hospitals, Fishery, Household Activities, Shops,Tourism one needs reliable source of electricity. Nor grid connectivity is provided by State Grid. The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) has provided this project (Lighting a Billion Lives, LaBL ) to Sebayan Sangha.

Activities Performed

  • To organize village staffto assemble at Sebayan Office for monthly meeting.
  • To monitor project sub-activity on charging parameters/generation, malfunctioning of panel, collection, accounting and monthly deposit.
  • Maintenance of Solar Lanterns.
  • Monthly report generation.
  • Log book for solar lantern rentals.
  • Educate villagers about solar energy.

Clean Energy

Natural energetic processes that can be harnessed with little pollution, such as fuels derived from plants, geothermal power, wind power, small-scale hydropower, solar energy, Biomass power, tidal power and wave power.
The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), defined in Article 12 of the Protocol, allows a country with an emission-reduction or emission-limitation commitment under the Kyoto Protocol to implement an emission-reduction project in developing countries.
PROJECT COST: Rs. 15,00,000/-
PROJECT BENEFICIARY: 10 villages (600 Solar Lanterns), 6000 families
PROJECT OUTCOME: Supplying 600 Lanterns (5 Watt LED)

(Current Status: The Grid connectivity has extended to our operation area as such the requirement /demand of Solar Charging station has come to standstill. Some of the stations got damaged due to cyclonic spell Bulbul recently)
